THE THOUSAND DOLLAR MAN Introducing Colt Ryder One Man One Mission No Rules edition by JT Brannan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

The Thousand Dollar Man is a myth. An urban legend, his appearance prayed for by the poor and downtrodden of the United States. They say he goes from town to town, helping people who have problems. Any kind of problems.
They put adverts in their local paper, put notices up in the local stores, always hoping that one day he will walk through their town and see them, act upon them. And if he does – and as long as the client can gather together a thousand dollars to pay - their problems will disappear.
But it wasn’t always that way.
Colt Ryder was let down by everyone. A military veteran, scarred both mentally and physically by his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, after being medically discharged he tried for years to make an honest living. But after a series of menial jobs, he was eventually fired from a meat packing factory for protecting a fellow worker from a bullying boss. And when his home was then burglarized, his savings and possessions all taken, something in him snapped.
Homeless and unemployed, driven by anger and resentment against the system, he decided to change, to revert to his old skills and cross the Americas helping those who need him, those with nobody else to stand up for them.
All he asks for is one thousand dollars a job.
Whatever it is.
Whatever it takes.
The Thousand Dollar Man is the start of an exciting, high-octane action thriller series, perfect for fans of Jack Reacher!
Novel – approx. 200 pages

This was a good read, just not quite my cup of tea. The background was revealed grudgingly, it seems, and in later clumps. Some of his skill maintenance should have been part of his daily or weekly activities (and it apparently was) but it was never commented on till late in the read. The Mexican cartel bad guys went down like bowling pins even when well armed. Our boy was killing bad guys like in a shooting gallery. Not a lot of love for the characters involved was created so interest waned. No feel good ending, and that is significant to me. I mean, I'll take a cliff-hanger over a Debbie-downer any day. Author obviously has talent and just needed an inner circle friend to help point out the weakness of some parts and flow. Of course a lot of inner circles of authors end up praising the writing of their friend and don't have the brutal honesty to be of much help. I've seen similar situations in writing groups and some people just can't criticize another person's work. That's okay, but you don't make my inner circle when I write the "great novel" without balls, be ye man or woman. Sycophants need not apply. And I could be wrong - this author may not have had anyone review it, but for grammatical mistakes. In any case, it's an okay read: 3.0 stars. I believe this author can do better.Product details

THE THOUSAND DOLLAR MAN Introducing Colt Ryder One Man One Mission No Rules edition by JT Brannan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
For the most part I enjoyed this story. It is almost believable. My only gripe had to do with some of the talks and events that involved guns and gun play. Some was inaccurate and distracting to me.
But overall this was a good read.
Well, this is the first of J.T. Brannan's books that I have read. The Thousand Dollar Man. Quite a title, and well suited. Great read, and it leaves you wanting for more at the end. Guaranteed. And, I believe there will be others as a continuation of this one. Can't just leave it here. Read it folks, and you will see what I mean. This man, Colt Ryder, will tackle just about any kind of job, for a thousand dollars. That's right. One Thousand Dollars. What a story. Won't spoil it for you. Read it. You will not be disappointed. Edge of your seat all the way....Guaranteed.
Pretty damned good read. Didn't know what to expect with this one but wasn't disappointed. Spoiler alert.
This one starts with Colt Ryder. He's a Vet. He was in the 75th Ranger Regiment and in recon. His job was to watch and record what went on in a targeted village. He and three others in recon did just that reporting all they saw and recorded. It took a month of careful surveillance before the attack was carried out.
This intel was used to plan a raid on that village. A raid that went oh so bad. Ryder and his three team mates weren't supposed to be part of the attack, just the gatherer of the intel for the attack.
Ryder watched and knew right away things were going bad for his 75th Rangers. He and the others, minus Janey the sniper, headed out to assist. Both of those with him were killed but Ryder didn't stop, he entered that building and killed everything in site. He ended up going out a window on top of a jihadist. He had multiple bullet wounds and broken bones. But he survived. Survived to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor that day. He was also medically discharged with one hundred thousand dollars which he gave to the wife of one of his dead Ranger buddies. A woman who needed the money to help pay bills for her sick son.
Ryder then looked for work. Even though he keeps himself in excellent shape and is an expert in unarmed combat, and is an expert marksman and can use a knife and fighting sticks jobs were hard to come by. No one cared about his CMH or what he had done in the Middle East war.
He did everything from flipping burgers to bouncing at clubs. With his resume he thought surely some security outfit would hire him but they were concerned with his medical discharge and wouldn't take a chance on him. After a few years Ryder finally became the thousand dollar man. You pay him a thousand dollars and he will fix your problem or find who you need found.
This is how he found Kane. Kane is a German Shepherd, Mastiff mix. A dog he found as a pup when he busted a dog fighting ring. Kane is now his constant companion and one very capable attack dog. A dog who will kill to protect Ryder if need be. One very well trained dog.
Ryder found himself in Laredo, Texas. He found and ad for the thousand dollar man. An ad that would land him in Mexico. An ad that would pit him against a drug cartel. An ad that would require every skill he possessed to fulfill his contract and stay alive.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Ryder, Kane, Emilio Rosales, his wife Camila, Elena Rosales, her cousin, a man named Santiago, a man named Sanchez who's high up in the cartels, drugs, prostitution, Nueva Laredo in Mexico, Laredo, Texas, a Ryder who finds Elena's cousin and gets info from him, a Ryder who then located Santiago and gets his intel, a captured Ryder, a Ryder who makes his escape and kills five to do it, a Ryder who then kills to capture Sanchez, a Sanchez who tells him all about Elena Rosales, a Ryder who goes where Sanchez had him pointed, back to Laredo, Texas, a house owned by the cartel, a Ryder who once again kills in that house, an Elena who makes a run for it, a Ryder who does catch her, a Ryder who listens to her story and knows the Elena Rosales her parents are looking for is long dead and Colt Ryder doing his best to help those that need it, finish his mission and stay alive.
Five Stars. Damned good read.
J.T. Brannan is on my 'must read' list. I love his Mark Cole books. This is a new character and it is a very different premise and yes, it does remind me a little bit of Jack Reacher. It will be interesting to see if he can keep the series interesting and complex. I did enjoy the book and I do recommend it strongly to those who like this type of character and a little bit of vigilante (which I love when it is well done).
There is a good story in here waiting to be told. The unusual circumstances of a disappearance were quite creative and left me intrigued. As events unfolded it seemed to do so in a manner that felt a bit rushed. I wanted to know more.
What I got a lot of was Colt Ryder's fighting abilities. Yes, this book introduces his character, but the guy has too many bragging rights. I like action, but current encounters in addition to the past were overkill.
I liked the book, but felt it could have been improved with a tune up.
Finally a nice surprise. Usually I'm a fan of the "zombie" genre, yet I could definitely identify with the thousand dollar man. Now if only I had his skills -) In our totally over-complicated world he cuts through the sh**** with a laser sharpened knife, a zero-nonsense guy with a moral compass long forgotten. Good action, keeps you reading, gives you enough depth for a necessary background to get the characters, but not an ounce more than that. Now, if the writer could get a little more technical with the equipment.... still. I love the 1000 dollar man!
